Course description

Digital Darkroom and colour correction covers the fundamentals of digital images acquired from scanning or digital cameras and correcting them. The focus of this course is on optimizing images and the colour correction process within Adobe Photoshop. Topics include colour theory as it relates to digital images, scanning, resolution, digital image formats, and the colour correction process, & CMYK conversion. The course will be provided in a lecture/lab format with in-class exercises providing hands-on experience. This course is equivalent to and replaces MDIA 1111.

Course learning outcomes / competencies

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between additive and subtractive colour.
  • Mix colour using RGB and CMY values, and the importance of opponency colours.
  • Determine the appropriate resolution for a digital image depending on the final output.
  • Save an image file in the appropriate file format depending on its content and usage.
  • Make appropriate colour management settings in Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Crop, rotate, straighten and resize digital images.
  • Perform basic retouching tasks.
  • Maximize the tonal range in a digital image.
  • Be able to use basic functions of Adobe Camera Raw.
  • Establish correct neutral tones in a digital image.
  • Be able to use basic functions of Adobe Camera Raw.

  • Correct a colour cast in a digital image.
  • Adjust contrast to enhance details in an image’s focal point.
  • Improve sharpness of a image using Photoshop’s Unsharp mask.
  • Use LAB colour space to enhance image appearance.
  • Custom CMYK settings, GCR, UCR, usage for different press technology and paper substrates.
